In March, the secret provision known as the Monsanto
Protection Act, a rider anonymously attached to a spending bill, sailed through
Congress—but it ignited a firestorm of outrage from the public. This new law
strips federal courts of the authority to halt the sale and planting of
illegal, potentially hazardous genetically engineered crops even while USDA is
performing an environmental impact statement.
Sen. Jeff Merkley plans to introduce an amendment to the
upcoming Senate Farm Bill that would repeal that provision. Repealing it now
would be a signal from the American people that nothing like this provision
should be attempted in the future.
Sen. Merkely needs to build support for the amendment to
improve its chances of being voted on when the Farm Bill goes to the Senate
