Tell HHS to Support the ABC Coding System!

Standardized medical coding systems ensure the timely and accurate electronic processing of insurance bills and claims. Currently, conventional medicine and Medicare utilize the CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Codes that are owned by the American Medical Association. However, most integrative medical treatments do not have a designated code—so reimbursement is more difficult. That is where ABC coding comes into play.

The ABC coding system identifies services, remedies, and supplies provided by phyisicans working in professions such as nursing, behavioral health, alternative medicine, ethnic and minority care, midwifery, and spiritual care. ABC codes fill a gap in mainstream coding medicine and complement existing code systems used in the allopathic setting.

Please contact Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to urge acceptance of the ABC coding system, which will increase consumer access to complementary and alternative treatments for nonacute care.

There is currently a gap in the insurance billing and coding system used in mainstream medicine -- a gap that directly limits my choice in treatments. The predominant claims filing system utilizes the CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Codes that are owned by the American Medical Association. However, it fails to provide codes for services by acupuncturists, advanced practice nurses, behavioral health providers, chiropractors, dieticians, holistic physicians, massage therapists, midwives, naturopathic doctors, nutritionists, pharmacists, and physical and occupational therapists.

The ABC coding system reflects care that is not described by the conventional or allopathic-centric code set. The ABC code is designed to be compatible with the existing CPT/ICD claims filing system, and has been employed successfully in over two million claim transactions -- at a cost benefit of fifty percent. There are thousands of qualified providers (many of whom are not MDs) who would be eligible for reimbursement with these codes. This will not only close the medical workforce shortage, but also expand consumers' choices to access non-acute care.

Please accept and implement the ABC coding to ensure that services currently not coded under the existing systems will be made available to any willing entity who provides healthcare. ABC codes will fill a significant gap in mainstream coding medicine, and will complement existing code systems used in the allopathic setting. This will allow insurance claims to be processed more efficiently.
