Recently I learned about how the FDA classifies drugs for use by pregnant women (Categories A, B, C, D, and X). I was surprised to learn that in two of the five categories, there is no evidence at all of the impact of these drugs on pregnant women -- and doubly shocked that acetaminophen has no classification at all. Given that there is a proven link between this drug and fetal risk, I'm writing to ask that the FDA immediately classify acetaminophen as a Category D drug.

Acetaminophen is frequently recommended to pregnant women as an alternative to opioids, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (the active ingredient in Aleve). However, new research suggests that acetaminophen during pregnancy may promote severe ADHD in children.

A study in JAMA Pediatrics has found that the children of women who took acetaminophen while pregnant had a 30% increased risk of ADHD during the first seven years of life, as well as a 37% increased risk of hyperkinetic disorder (HKD), a severe form of ADHD. The more acetaminophen used during pregnancy, the higher the child's risk of ADHD-related problems.

Because acetaminophen, despite its proven risks, has no FDA classification, it may be harming millions of children! I hope the FDA will give its prompt attention to this matter.
