Help Us Protect Freedom of Vaccine Choice in Texas!

The recent outbreak of measles has been all over the news recently, and anyone who believes in the freedom of informed choice on a question of vaccinations is proclaimed an hysterical “anti-vaxxer,” when the science clearly advises caution.

The Texas legislature is considering a bill, SB 298, that would add a new meningitis vaccine mandate for public school students. They may also be considering another a bill that would eliminate the religious and conscientious exemptions, making it more difficult for concerned parents to protect their children.

Parents have a right to make their own decisions about treatments for their children based on informed consent. Limiting a patient’s ability to make informed decisions about what gets put into their body violates medical ethics.

The recent Disneyland measles outbreak has brought the vaccine debate front and center. I understand a bill has been introduced, SB 298, that would add a new meningitis vaccine mandate for public school students, and other bills may be considered that would eliminate the religious and conscientious exemptions, making it more difficult for concerned parents to protect their children.

This raises a number of concerns for parents, children, and patients in general.

Parents have a right to make their own decisions about treatments for their children based on informed consent. Limiting a patient's ability to make informed decisions about what gets put into his or her body violates medical ethics.

I know that the vaccination question is a hotly debated topic, even in the medical community. Many parents are concerned that some vaccines are unsafe because they may contain harmful ingredients like mercury or aluminum. A study published in Current Medical Chemistry in 2011 stated that the "continued use of aluminum adjuvants in various vaccines for children as well as the general public may be of significant concern" because "aluminum presented in this form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences."

Other experts are concerned that overloading a young immune system with so many vaccines at once can cause genetic changes. Some generally support vaccinations but wish there were more scientific clarity.

There is also a question as to whether the meningococcal vaccine is even necessary. The vaccine does not include a strain of the disease that is responsible for one-third to one-half of cases in the US. Why should children be exposed to danger when the vaccine may not even protect them from the disease in the first place?

However, I think we all can agree that we need to keep information clear, unambiguous, and uncensored, and to allow people to make informed choices for themselves and their families -- especially when so much information and evidence exists of the possible dangers posed by some vaccines.

Parents who question vaccinations are often demonized simply because they are concerned for the safety and well-being of their children and do not want them to be subjected to medical procedures they are uncomfortable with.

Current law protects both my family's health and our right to make our own healthcare choices, and I call upon you to oppose ANY legislation that would add a new vaccine mandates for public school students or eliminate exemptions to vaccination.
