I was thrilled to learn that New York is considering a bill to ban BPA in cash register receipts, and I am writing to ask you to give S 4903 your full support.

Bisphenol A (BPA) was created as a synthetic sex hormone. Today it is widely used in thermal cash register receipts -- in fact, it is BPA's most common pathway into the human body.

BPA is a known hormone disruptor. The National Institutes of Health is concerned that BPA exposure in children may lead to problems with brain development, behavior, early puberty, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. New research has also suggested that BPA may interfere with metabolism and lead to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes in humans. And BPA has been banned in Canada, the European Union, and even China. Why are we behind the rest of the world?

Last year, researchers at the Environmental Working Group collected samples of "carbonless" and thermal cash register receipts from fast food restaurants, big retailers, grocery stores, gas stations and post offices in seven states and the District of Columbia and had them tested by a renowned lab. The lab found that 40 percent had high levels of BPA. Another study found measurable levels of BPA in receipts from eight out of ten suburban Boston-area grocery stores.

It is in the best interest of New York to significantly reduce citizens' exposure to BPA as soon as possible, and to ultimately eliminate all exposure. Please give S 4903 your full support!
