Everyone Take Action!

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has sponsored legislation in over forty states that lumps dietitians and nutritionists together into one licensing bill and requires nutritionists to complete a licensing program defined by the ADA in order to practice nutritional therapy. Even if the nutritionist holds a Masters or a PhD in Nutrition, the nutritionist is still required to complete registration through the ADA just to continue their practice. In some states, individuals are even prohibited from using the words “nutritionist” and “nutritional care.”(1)

We take issue with this legislation because the ADA is creating a monopoly over the practice of nutritional therapy to the detriment of consumer choice, and highly educated professionals are being prohibited from practicing their profession.

Email the ADA leadership and tell them to return the payments they receive from junk food and pharmaceutical companies, and end their attempts stop attempts to monopolize nutritional therapy through underhanded statewide legislative efforts.

Dear American Dietetic Association,

You describe your corporate mission as "optimizing the nation's health through food and nutrition." As concerned citizens, we do not believe that corporate interests of junk food companies and the pharmaceutical industry share the same vision. It has become obvious to even laypersons that the payments received by the ADA from junk food companies and the pharmaceutical industry, and the consistently pro-food industry stance the ADA takes on issues effecting America's health, have discredited your organization.
