Support the Plastic Bag Bill in Indiana!

Many states are moving against the bullying tactics of some members of the plastic bag industry with legislation meant to encourage recyclable, compostable, or reusable bags instead. In Indiana, HB 1521 would require retailers to charge customers ten cents per disposable plastic bag, and also offer reusable carryout bags at the register.

I was thrilled to see that a bill has been introduced to do something about single-use, disposable plastic bags in Indiana. As your constituent, I'm writing to ask your support for HB 1521. It would require retailers to charge customers ten cents per disposable plastic bag, and also offer reusable carryout bags at the register.

Plastic grocery bags are not biodegradable. They clog waterways, spoil the landscape, pollute the soil and water (and therefore us), and choke birds and marine mammals who mistake them for food. Once they end up in landfills, they may take 1,000 years or more to break down into ever smaller particles that continue to pollute the environment.

We desperately need to encourage citizens to bring reusable bags with them when they shop for groceries. Until then, a bill that requires the sale of reusable carryout bags at the register -- and institutes a financial penalty for using disposable plastic bags -- is a good beginning.
