Tell Congress to Make TSA Get Rid of Cancer-Causing Airport Scanners!

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has agreed remove the airport body scanners that produce a naked image of travelers because of privacy concerns. They will still be using the machines that use x-rays with dangerous radiation backscatter. These machines emit low levels of ionizing radiation with levels that could be 10 to 20 times higher than the manufacturer’s calculations. There have been inconsistencies in how the machines are calibrated to ensure radiation safety, which means that up to 100 US passengers could get cancer from them every year.

TSA also has a contract with makers of scanners that use millimeter waves, a technology that is thought to be safer—and which also creates a less explicit image of the passenger. Please tell Congress that the time to get rid of all the backscatter machines is now, when some of the machines are being taken out of airports. Remind them that privacy is not the only concern—our health matters even more—and tell them TSA needs to use millimeter wave scanners exclusively.
