Two new reports detail terrifying threats to the health of the youngest and most vulnerable among us. Please take swift action to ensure the safety of baby food.

The first report, from a group of scientists and child advocates involved in Project TENDR which stands for Targeting Environmental Neuro-Development Risks, demonstrates how the presence of phthalates, a group of chemicals used in many consumer goods, including many toys, floor coverings, food packaging, soaps, shampoos and various other products, cause devastating damage to children's brains.

Other health impacts of phthalates include childhood obesity, asthma, ADHD, cancer and undescended testes in baby boys.

A second congressional report just out came at the request by the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. In creating the report, 7 manufacturers of baby foods were asked to have their products tested for a variety of toxins including cadmium, arsenic lead and mercury.

Earth's Best products had arsenic levels of 309 ppb of arsenic. Beech-Nut baby food had levels as high as 886.9 ppb of lead.

Three companies- Walmart, Campbell's and Sprout Organic failed to comply with the request.

Heavy metals cause neurotoxic effects, low birth weight and cognitive scores, anemia and stunted growth.

Exposing our kids to these dangers is unacceptable. We need stronger standards to keep these toxins out of baby food.
