Tell Congress to Support the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act!

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D–NY), the only microbiologist in Congress, has introduced the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, which has been supported by organizations like the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Center for Food Safety. The bill, HR 965, now has 74 cosponsors, but it has been stalled in the Subcommittee on Health since March 2011, and FDA has either been unable or unwilling to take substantive action on this issue.

The bill would ban the nontherapeutic use of antimicrobials in animals, and would ban the use of even therapeutic antimicrobials unless it can be demonstrated that there is “a reasonable certainty of no harm to human health” due to the development of antibiotic drug resistance.

Please ask your representative to vote YES on the bill, and ask your senators to introduce and support an identical bill in the Senate.
