Tell Congress to Permit Interstate Commerce of Unpasteurized Dairy Products

Representative Ron Paul introduced legislation that allows the shipment and distribution of unpasteurized milk and milk products for human consumption across state lines. This legislation removes an unconstitutional restraint on farmers who wish to sell or otherwise distribute—and people who wish to consume—raw milk and milk products.

Many Americans have come to the conclusion that unpasteurized milk is healthier than the pasteurized versions available today. In light of the recent unconstitutional raid on Rawesome Foods, a private co-op in California, we need legislation that explicitly allows people to buy and consume unpasteurized dairy products. While this bill cannot address state or local laws, HR 1830 will at least remove the greatest impediment nationwide, the prevention of interstate transport of raw dairy products.

In addition, ask your legislators to support “component pricing” of milk in the 2012 Farm Bill. Ask them to make sure producers are paid more for higher protein, or higher butterfat milk. Component pricing tends to incentivize higher quality milk and better agricultural practices, because healthy cows put to pasture will produce more valuable milk than sick cows in stalls.
