Tell Congress: No Backroom Deals for Tobacco and Polluters

It's Congress' job to pass bills to fund the federal government. But some members of Congress are taking advantage of the process. They want to attach dangerous policy provisions called riders to these important bills that would benefit polluters and the tobacco industry. We need you to urge your members of Congress to oppose these backroom deals.

Here are just a few of the riders that have been proposed that would harm lung health:

Tobacco

  • Weaken FDA’s new rule to protect kids from all tobacco products, including cigars and e-cigarettes, by “grandfathering” in all existing e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, pipe tobacco, and cigarillos. This would result in candy-flavored e-cigarettes remaining on the market indefinitely.
  • Exempt certain cigars from FDA’s authority including those that cost as little as $1.00 and come in candy-flavors

Air Pollution

  • Delay updated protections against ozone pollution, which would mean more asthma attacks and more premature deaths.
  • Prevent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from protecting the public from pollution from the oil and gas industry, including methane (which causes climate change) and carcinogens.
