There’s no question about it – when hospitals are inadequately staffed, patients suffer. Without safe staffing levels, patients risk longer hospital stays, infections, medication errors, falls, injury, even death.
But legislation has been introduced in Congress that would protect patients by holding hospitals accountable for the development and implementation of unit-by-unit nurse staffing plans. These plans would be created in coordination with direct care registered nurses (RNs), based on each unit’s unique circumstances and changing needs.
