Dear [Decision Maker],

As a public health professional, I strongly encourage you to support A1179/S5686 to restrict flavored tobacco product sales in New York. In 2009, Congress enacted the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act banning the use of flavors other than menthol in cigarettes. However, other tobacco products, including "little cigars" (cigarettes wrapped in paper containing tobacco), snuff and other smokeless tobacco products were not included in the prohibition. Despite the federal ban on flavored cigarettes, flavored cigars and smokeless tobacco products continue to inappropriately attract new young, users. This bill corrects that loophole created by cigar and smokeless tobacco companies..

This measure prohibits the sale in New York of most flavored tobacco products except in stores primarily devoted to the sale of tobacco that do not admit persons under 18. It does not apply to pipe tobacco and hand-made cigars.

Passing this bill to prohibit the sale of most flavored tobacco products not only responds appropriately to the tobacco industry's latest efforts to addict young people but also continues to highlight New York State as a national leader in tobacco control and prevention. This bill is an important step to protect our children, reduce their risk of nicotine addiction, and address the deadly and costly toll of tobacco on New Yorkers. Please encourage leadership to schedule the bill for a vote and support bill A1179A when it comes to the floor.

Sincerely
