The Equitas Health Institute for LGBTQ Health Equity is hosting the 2018 Transforming Care: LGBTQ & HIV/AIDS Health Equity Conference on October 18-19 at The Ohio State University Fawcett Center. Activists, academics, community members, and health & social service professionals are encouraged to attend this two-day conference that addresses health disparities affecting the LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS community.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity for professionals and community members to come together to share not only research and best practices but practical information like family planning, wellness activities, and health and safety initiatives.

This year’s theme will be Fighting for our Lives with a focus on:

  • Mental and Behavioral Health
  • Access to Care
  • Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility
  • Advocacy and Community Engagement
  • Clinical/Medical
  • Public Health/Prevention
  • Holistic Health Activities (i.e. meditation, yoga, aromatherapy, poetry)

In 1983 a group of AIDS activists stormed the closing of the 5th annual Lesbian and Gay Health Conference holding a banner reading Fighting for our Lives. At this seminal moment in AIDS activism the group presented their “Bill of Rights,” aka the Denver Principles, forever changing our response to HIV/AIDS and health care in general. Unfortunately, the fight is not over.

The actions of the current administration have demonstrated time and time again the lack of investment in protecting and advancing the rights, wellbeing, and health of members of the LGBTQ community and People Living with HIV (PLWH). In some cases, the administration appears to be directly undermining and harming these communities. We have chosen the theme Fighting for our Lives to pay homage to the work of advocates in the past and to highlight the urgent need to stand up, speak up, and fight for our fundamental rights through advocacy, activism, providing and obtaining comprehensive health care for our community, and standing in solidarity with all marginalized communities.

The learning objectives of the conference are as follows:

  • Develop the capacity for critical thinking about HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ health
  • Identify the successes and challenges of HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ care
  • Develop capacities and skills necessary to work effectively with the LGBTQ and PLWH communities

This event is being presented in partnership between Wexner Medical Center and Equitas Health Institute for LGBTQ Health Equity.
