Because of loopholes in current federal law, the cosmetics industry in the United States is essentially unregulated, with companies able to put virtually any ingredient into their products regardless of its health consequences.
These ingredients include heavy metals such as lead, and chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates (often found in fragrances and linked with asthma, birth defects and early puberty) and parabens (hormone-disrupting chemicals associated with breast cancer and reproductive toxicity).
We need safe cosmetics legislation to close these loopholes and protect all Americans. To get there will require broad lawmaker support when the Safe Cosmetics Act is reintroduced in the 113th Congress. The previous version of this bill was written to ensure cosmetics do not contain ingredients or contaminants linked to cancer, and to close loopholes that currently prevent consumers from knowing what's really in their products.
Please ask your Representative to support safe cosmetics legislation when it's reintroduced.
