Help Get Additional Congressional Support for The Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act

071113_appeal-BigCatAct.jpg Thanks to your efforts, the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act (H.R. 1998) is causing quite a stir here on Capitol Hill. With 50 co-sponsors and counting, this commonsense piece of legislation is garnering much-needed attention — but we can't let up on the pressure now. We need your help to ensure that this bill receives a hearing in the House Natural Resources Committee, so please ask your U.S. representative to co-sponsor the bill today.

Sponsored by U.S. Reps. Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), H.R. 1998 would prohibit future possession and breeding of lions, tigers and other big cats in the exotic "pet" trade. The bill also would require all current "owners" to register their big cats with the federal government.

At Born Free USA we continue to advocate for the end of exotic "pet" ownership, and our work to protect big cats includes many bold moves on behalf of tigers and African lions. The big cats trade involves tremendous suffering and grave dangers to human health and safety. This is why we remain deeply concerned that an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 big cats (or more!) are held in private ownership in the United States.
