First Book is excited to once again join forces with the Hillsborough County Bar Association to provide brand new books to children from low-income families in Hillsborough County - books for them to own and take home so they can enjoy them over and over again.
We know that the critical factor determining whether a child
becomes a reader is access to reading materials – specifically the number of
books in the home. One study found that children in middle-income
neighborhoods have, on average, access to thirteen books per child—however this
number dropped to one book for every
300 children in lowest-income neighborhoods.
First Book’s single mission is to provide children from
low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new
books. Since 1992, First Book’s innovative distribution models have
provided over 85 million new books to children in need through existing
literacy programs that serve disadvantaged children.
Help First Book bring the magic of bedtime stories and
dreams into the lives of the hardest to reach children. Every $2.50 donated
will put a brand new book in a child’s hands.
