Urge Congress To Pass Strong Privacy Laws

It’s time to demand that Congress pass strong privacy laws and protect our private financial information.

  • Capital One just announced that a hacker got her hands on the personal information of 106 million customers, mostly those who had applied for a credit card between 2005 and early 2019.

The stolen information includes names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, self-reported income, credit scores, credit limits, balances, payment history, 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 linked bank account numbers.
  • This hack—the latest of many—was only discovered after the hacker bragged about it online. Consumer watchdog U.S. PIRG called it the largest bank hack ever.
  • Just before that bad news, the Federal Trade Commission announced a $700 million settlement of the 2017 Equifax data breach, which affected 147 million Americans. While $700 million is a lot of money, it's less than a quarter's worth of the company's 2017 revenue. These penalties aren't sufficient to force corporations to act better.

Tell Congress: We need better privacy protections NOW.
