Urge Congress: Protect Landline Customers

The Illinois General Assembly has passed legislation that would eventually allow AT&T to end traditional landline service in its territory. But the phone company still needs to get approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to end landlines once and for all.

Here’s why CUB opposes AT&T.

  • Ending traditional home phone service would hurt customers who depend on landlines as the most reliable connection to 911, medical monitoring and home security systems.
  • AT&T does not yet offer wireless or Internet phone service that is a reliable alternative to traditional landlines for Illinois’ most vulnerable customers. That includes seniors, people with medical conditions, rural residents with bad cellphone service, and young families who want a dependable connection to 911.
  • Despite $58 billion in profits over the last five years, AT&T wants to push customers onto phone service that tends to be less reliable but will give the company a higher profit margin.

Please, tell your representatives in Congress to do everything they can to protect landline customers before the FCC.
