Ask the Guv: Veto the bad water bill

UPDATE: Back in August, the Governor signed into law the Water Privatization Act, a bad water bill. But due to a legal technicality, the General Assembly had to pass it again. (It did with far less support—opposition is growing!)

Now it's on the Governor's desk, so we have one more chance to improve Senate Bill 3051!

  • The Water Privatization Act would renew legislation passed five years ago that helps the state’s two biggest private water monopolies—Aqua Illinois and Illinois American Water—bankroll the purchase of municipal water systems.

  • The Act repeals any limits on the size of systems those corporations can buy, and it allows them to automatically raise their existing customers’ rates to fund those acquisitions.

  • But here's where we can make a difference: Ask Gov. Bruce Rauner to improve the legislation by adding a requirement that communities hold a referendum before being allowed to sell their water systems to private monopolies.

Tell Gov. Rauner to stand up to big water corporations and protect Illinois consumers.
