Mar. 12: Tell legislators to stand up to big water corporations

A state law passed last fall allows profit-driven private water companies to target any publicly owned water system in Illinois.

But a proposed bill would give water customers a say in whether their system is sold. House Bill 2392 would require a referendum of voters before a municipality could privatize its water and sewer distribution system.

  • The Water Privatization Act passed last fall helps private water companies bankroll the purchase of municipal water systems, removes any limits on the size of systems those corporations can buy—AND allows them to automatically raise their existing customers’ rates to fund these acquisitions.

  • These private companies are motivated by profit. Aqua Illinois and Illinois American—the two largest private water companies in the statecharge 20 to 70 percent more than public systems in the Chicago region, the Chicago Tribune found

  • Ratepayers should get a say in what happens to these valuable assets.

Tell your legislators to support HB 2392 and protect consumers’ water bills.
