Consumers across Illinois report that scam artists are impersonating utility workers to demand immediate payment to avoid disconnection, or to gain access to their homes. These scams can target anyone, but seniors and non-English-speakers are frequently singled out.
Real utility representatives will never ask you to buy a prepaid card or make payments to a person or entity other than the utility. Utilities will not disconnect service until they have made multiple attempts to contact the consumer, including mailing you a disconnection notice.
