August 28, 2018: CUB Consumer Alert for Electric Customers

Please sign our petition asking legislators to reform Illinois' energy markets. In the thank you email, CUB will send you a Consumer Protection Kit, which includes tips on avoiding bad deals and information on good choices in the electric market.

  • CUB has issued a statewide consumer alert to educate people about "green plans," and warn them about bad deals in the electric market. At hundreds of consumer events each year, CUB sees first-hand the seniors and families who pay high electric (and gas) rates because they are on bad alternative supplier deals.
  • A reporter for Crain's Chicago Business recently wrote how his parents overpaid by $600 on a bad deal: "I’ve been writing about how electric suppliers mislead and at times rip off residents for several years, and it never ceases to amaze how regulators and lawmakers here allow this state of affairs to persist. But it didn’t get personal until now."
  • The State of Illinois found that consumers over the last year lost a record $227.6 million on bad deals at the hands of alternative electric suppliers. Total losses over the last three years are more than $551 million.

Please sign our petition urging the Illinois General Assembly to reform the electric and gas markets.

To the Illinois General Assembly:

I urge you to pass meaningful reforms to better protect Illinois consumers from bad deals in the electric and gas markets.

Illinois consumers over the last year lost a record $227.6 million on bad deals at the hands of alternative electric suppliers, according to a report from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Over the last three years, the losses total $551 million.

We are glad the ICC last year strengthened some state regulations, but we need to build off those improvements. I urge the General Assembly to support stronger consumer protections in Illinois' electric and gas markets.

Sincerely,
