Dear General Assembly:
As a Chicago resident concerned about my pocketbook, I urge you to fix the Peoples Gas pipe-replacement program.
The program’s cost estimates have skyrocketed from $2.6 billion to as high as $11 billion. And an analysis by Attorney General Lisa Madigan says if nothing is done to fix the program it could help double gas bills over the next 20 years.
Crain's Chicago Business reports that Chicagoans like me paid an average of 80 percent more for gas service last winter, compared with Nicor Gas customers. The paper reported that Chicago could some day be in for a heating-affordability crisis.
And yet, the parent company of Peoples Gas raked in $854 million in profits, in just the first nine months of 2018.
This is a looming disaster. I urge you to stand up for your constituents and do everything you can to implement reforms that would subject the program’s out-of-control spending to more regulatory scrutiny.
