Tell Congress to Reject Unjust Bans on Abortion Coverage

Anti-choice extremists in the new Congress are targeting abortion again.  A new bill introduced in the House (H.R. 3) would go even farther than the Stupak Amendment Congress rejected last year in eliminating insurance coverage for abortion and allowing public hospitals to refuse medically necessary abortions for women facing life-threatening emergencies.

H.R. 3, introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), would seriously restrict access to reproductive health care:

The bill would allow public hospitals to refuse medically necessary abortions to  women facing life-threatening emergencies.

The bill would permanently deny abortion coverage to women who rely on  government health care, including Native Americans, federal employees, women in the military, Peace Corps volunteers, poor women enrolled in Medicaid, and women in federal prisons.

The bill would gut private insurance coverage for abortion by imposing excessive burdens on insurance companies that offer coverage for abortion and by imposing new taxes on businesses and individuals who purchase private health insurance plans that include abortion coverage.

The bill would change tax laws to penalize businesses that offer abortion coverage and prevent women from deducting medical expenses related to abortion care.

House Speaker John Boehner has made this anti-choice bill "one of [the House of Representatives'] highest legislative priorities."

Vote No on H.R. 3, an Anti-Choice Bill to Eliminate Insurance Coverage for Abortion

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a friend of the Center for Inquiry, I ask that you strongly oppose H.R. 3, the legislation introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) to eliminate all insurance coverage for abortion care.

The Smith bill would seriously damage a woman's ability to access appropriate and necessary reproductive health care. On behalf of myself and CFI, I ask that you vote against this unjust legislation.

I look forward to hearing from you about this matter.

Sincerely,
