On February 9, 2011, Representative Pete Stark proposed H.Res. 81, expressing support for designating February 12, 2011 as Darwin Day and recognizing the importance of science to the betterment of humanity.
At a time when American students are falling behind their international competitors in science and mathematics, it is imperative that we recognize and celebrate the work of great scientists such as Charles Darwin. Incredibly, The New York Times
recently reported that only 28 percent of biology teachers present
evidence for evolution as recommended by the National Research Council,
while 13 percent “explicitly advocate” creationism.
