Tell Congress: Pass the Bangladesh Human Rights Resolution

This week, a 28-year-old university student was killed in Bangladesh in an attack by suspected Islamic extremists. Najimuddin Samad, and atheist and activist who advocated for secularism and criticized radical Islam, was hacked to death and shot in the streets as he was returning home from class.

This is the first attack on a secularist in Bangladesh in 2016, following a string of attacks in 2015 that began with the murder of Bangladeshi-American secular activist Avijit Roy — a friend and ally of the Center for Inquiry — and which has also impacted Hindu, Christian, and Shia minorities.

Fortunately, there is a bipartisan measure in Congress, House Resolution 396, which demands that Bangladesh affirm its secular constitution, protect minorities, prevent the growth of extremism, and guarantee human rights for all. H. Res. 396 is long overdue and, given continued threats and attacks, should be passed immediately.

However, this resolution has not received even a subcommittee hearing, because some members of Congress will not support it.

Attacks on religious and non-religious minorities continue to happen in Bangladesh because the government refuses to stand up and strongly defend fundamental human rights and instead kowtows to religious sentiments for political purposes. It’s time that the international community demanded more from Bangladesh. This is especially true of the United States, which is a massive trading and security partner with Bangladesh.

CFI urges you to contact your U.S. representative right now and tell them to support human rights in Bangladesh by co-sponsoring and urging passage of H. Res. 396.
