America Does Not Ban Religions: Urge the House to Pass the Freedom of Religion Act

Several leading candidates for political offices have promised in their campaigns that if they win in November, they will work to implement a ban on Muslims entering the United States.

The Center for Inquiry (CFI) strongly rejects this stereotyping of an entire religion based on the actions of a small number of claimed adherents, and believes there should be no religious litmus test to enter the U.S. Such a test runs contrary to the most basic principles on which the U.S. was founded, including freedom of religion.

Fortunately, a bipartisan group of more than 100 members of Congress, led by Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), have introduced the Freedom of Religion Act of 2016 (H.R. 5207), which would ensure that immigrants, refugees and international travelers are not denied entry to the U.S. solely based on their religion, or lack of religion.

This Act would simply amend Chapter 2 of title I of the Immigration and Nationality Act by inserting after section 219 the following sentence: “Notwithstanding any other provision of the immigration laws, an alien may not be denied admission to the United States because of the alien’s religion or lack of religious beliefs.”

No religious group — Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, atheists, or others — should face discrimination simply for their religious affiliation. CFI strongly supports this proposal and urges you to join us by using our pre-written form to contact your U.S. representative today and tell them to support the Freedom of Religion Act of 2016!
