Act Now! Reject Anti-Science NASA Nominee

This afternoon, the Senate will vote on James Bridenstine to be the administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Bridenstine has not demonstrated the scientific values necessary to lead this agency in advancing our understanding of space and Earth. He doesn't even respect the LGBTQ Americans who would be among his employees.

NASA is one of our country’s treasures. From landing on the moon to researching drone traffic management systems to studying Earth’s climate, NASA has advanced our understanding of the universe, and our place in it, for almost 60 years. The NASA Administrator should be deeply experienced in science and be respected throughout the scientific fields covered by the agency.

Bridenstine does not meet this standard.

Bridenstine has no scientific experience or credentials whatsoever. His background managing the Tulsa Air and Space Museum is woefully inadequate for leading the world’s premier space and science agency with a budget of nearly $19 billion. And as reported by the Daily Beast, there are questions about whether he engaged in self-dealing from the Museum’s budget.

During his confirmation hearing, Bridenstine denied the overwhelming evidence that human activity is changing Earth’s climate. This is not a side issue: Earth climate research is a critical part of NASA’s mission. The NASA administrator must be someone who will approach this challenge using facts and evidence, not ideology.

Bridenstine also has a history of supporting discrimination against LGBTQ Americans. In 2013, he called it a “disappointment” that the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage, explaining pseudoscientifically that "the court’s decision was a disappointment not only because it is contrary to millennia of human experience." Bridenstine is painfully unaware of the need to treat every NASA employee with fairness and respect.

CFI urges you to ask your Senators to vote to reject this unqualified, inexperienced, anti-science nominee to be the administrator of NASA. To ensure that your voice is heard, we encourage you to call their offices in Washington, D.C. right now. Oppose James Bridenstine's Anti-Science Nomination for NASA Administrator!

Dear [Decision Maker],

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is one of our country's treasures. From landing on the moon to researching drone traffic management systems to studying Earth's climate, NASA has advanced our understanding of the universe, and our place in it, for almost 60 years. The NASA Administrator should be experienced and respected in the scientific fields covered by the agency. Current nominee James Bridenstine does not meet this standard.

Bridenstine has no scientific experience. He doesn't even have a science degree. His experience managing the Tulsa Air and Space Museum is woefully inadequate to lead the world's premier space and science agency with a budget of nearly $19 billion. And as reported by the Daily Beast, there are questions about whether he engaged in self-dealing from the Museum's budget.

During his confirmation hearing, Bridenstine denied the overwhelming evidence that human activity is changing Earth's climate. Earth climate research is a critical part of NASA's mission, so the NASA administrator must be someone who will approach this challenge with experience and scientific values.

And Bridenstine has a history of supporting discrimination against LGBTQ Americans. In 2013, he called it a "disappointment" that the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage, explaining pseudoscientifically that "the court's decision was a disappointment not only because it is contrary to millennia of human experience." Bridenstine is not prepared to treat every NASA employee with fairness and respect.

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose this unqualified, inexperienced, anti-science candidate. Americans deserve an experienced NASA administrator who values scientific integrity and respects every American.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
