Stop Congress from Undermining the Johnson Amendment!

Dear Friend of CFI,

Earlier this year, you helped us protect the Johnson Amendment from repeal by the religious right. But the fight isn’t over yet.

The Johnson Amendment is the federal law that prevents nonprofit organizations, such as churches and groups like the Center for Inquiry, from endorsing candidates for political office. If the Johnson Amendment were scrapped, unaccountable dark money could flood from right-wing churches directly into our election system.

Back in June, we told you that Donald Trump's religious right allies in Congress inserted a provision into a massive 2019 spending bill that would make it all but impossible for the IRS to enforce the Johnson Amendment on churches. With a possible government shutdown looming, religious conservatives see an opportunity to ram the bill through Congress with this harmful provision intact. We can't let them get away with it.

If a 2019 spending bill is not passed before December 7, government funding will cease and the federal government will shut down. Members of Congress will feel pressured to vote for any spending bill that averts a shutdown. It’s going to take all of our voices together, telling them to stay strong and demanding that the provision attacking the Johnson Amendment is removed from the bill.

We need you to help us fight back against this cynical plot by the religious right to turn churches into super-PACs for their favored candidates. Congress needs to know that their secular constituents will never allow such a destructive violation of the separation of church and state.

To ensure that your voice is heard, we encourage you to call your representative right now and say, “I’m joining secular Americans across the country to tell Congress to keep dark money from the religious right out of our election system. A congressional spending bill must NOT include any provisions that would weaken or undermine the Johnson Amendment, which is a critical law that upholds our separation of church and state.”

All you need to do is call (202) 224-3121 with your zip code to be connected to your elected officials. If you are unable to call, please use our action alert system to send your representatives a written message. Thank you for supporting the separation of church and state!

Don't Undermine the Johnson Amendment!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As Congress considers appropriations legislation for fiscal year 2019, I urge you to oppose any provision that would repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment. For decades, the Johnson Amendment has protected our constitutional separation of church and state by prohibiting houses of worship and other tax-exempt nonprofits from endorsing electoral candidates. Any attempt to weaken this law is an attack on the secular foundation of our country.

As a secular American, I am proud to support the Johnson Amendment and the constitutional separation of church and state. Appropriations legislation must not include any provision that would allow tax-exempt houses of worship to directly influence electoral campaigns. As the appropriations process moves forward, please vote to uphold the Johnson Amendment and the separation of church and state.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
