Who is eligible to participate?

Individuals, families, businesses, households; this event is open to everyone and is all ages.

Sign up individually, or unite with friends, colleagues or family members to form a team. As a virtual event, we are Sleeping Out while physically apart, but standing together in solidarity with young people in need.

What will the Sleep Out look like?

On April 29 (event night), participants will tune into our live, interactive event via Zoom from wherever they are.

After the live broadcast concludes for the evening, participants can retire to their chosen Sleep Out spot. This could be in a living room or backyard, on a balcony or even at an office. It is each participant's responsibility to select a safe and legal Sleep Out spot, and respect any government mandated COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time. As the location is chosen individually by participants, Covenant House does not provide insurance or accept any liability for participants' safety during the Sleep Out.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, you should follow health authority guidelines on physical distancing. For more information, please refer to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and BC Centre for Disease Control (BC CDC).

What is expected of participants?

As Sleep Out is a peer-to-peer fundraising and awareness-building event, all participants are challenged to fundraise for Covenant House Vancouver. We make fundraising easy for all our participants by providing them with a personal fundraising page, along with tools, tips, and resources for asking their networks for support.

We expect participants will approach the event with an open heart, an open mind, and a willingness to work hard for something outside of their comfort zone.

What if I have never fundraised before?

From the moment you register, the Sleep Out team is available to help you. Visit our Fundraising Toolkit and Social Media Guide for content, images, and ideas to help kickstart your fundraising. In the weeks leading up to the event, you will also receive emails with fundraising tips, copy-and-paste content and information to help you.

What are participants fundraising in support of?

All funds raised for Sleep Out: Home Edition will go directly towards the Outreach Program at Covenant House Vancouver. Our Outreach Team meet youth on the street, offer food, counselling, minor medical attention and friendship.

How do I get started?

Step 1: Register and start your Sleep Out experience by making a lead registration gift, which helps keep the lights on and doors open at Covenant House Vancouver.

Step 2: Raise funds and awareness for your Sleep Out campaign using the tools we provide. Once you’re registered, you’ll gain access to a personal fundraising page and further resources to help you spread the word to friends and family. For every dollar you raise, you’ll help youth in need and provide critical services.

Step 3: Sleep Out on Friday, April 29. Join us for a meaningful evening of programming online via a Zoom meeting and Sleep Out, overnight. By Sleeping Out, you are showing solidarity and support to the most vulnerable youth. How and where you spend the night is up to you. In the morning, we will come back together online on Zoom for a morning reflection. Please note the Zoom link will be emailed to you in the days prior to the event.

How do I fundraise?

All participants make a commitment to raising funds for youth experiencing homelessness. Fundraising is made easy by way of your own personal fundraising page where friends and family can donate to your Sleep Out campaign. Once you complete your registration, you’ll gain access to your online personal fundraising page.

You will receive fundraising tools which include tips, email templates, and social media content to help you along the way. We ask that you approach the event with an open heart and a willingness to work hard to raise critical funds for the young people at Covenant House Vancouver.

All funds raised will go towards funding our Street Outreach Program.

How can people donate?

The best way to make donations is online.

Each participant will have their own online fundraising page where they can direct their supporters to make a donation. The online system makes collecting donations easy, receipting instantaneous, goal tracking automatic, and minimizes administration costs for Covenant House.

Cheques should be made payable to Covenant House Vancouver and include the name of the Sleep Out participant.

How will people who donate receive their tax receipts?

Tax receipts for online gifts will automatically and instantly be sent to the donor by email. Cash and cheque donations will be receipted and mailed to the donor within 4 weeks of the gift being received by Covenant House Vancouver.
