Days after her first dance recital, Ava was diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer called Stage 5 Bilateral Wilms. She was just three years old.
Ava underwent rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove her entire left kidney and part of her right at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. She was declared cancer-free six months later.
Six years later, in January 2018, Ava was informed that her cancer had returned. She is currently receiving breakthrough care at Lurie Children’s, yet through every treatment, Ava continues to dance through the cancer.
“[Dancing] gives me something to look forward to,” says Ava, now eleven years old. Take a moment to see how she’s doing today.
