I began volunteering for Craig Hospital about 10 years ago in the dog therapy program. I brought my one year old Doberman "Sage" after we had completed numerous obedience and socialization classes. Sage was awarded the American Kennel Club Good Citizen Award during this time.
We began our volunteer work in the T-Rec area. There are numerous volunteers giving their time for such great people who need company and encouragement daily. As you all know I retired as a Deputy Sheriff with Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in August of 2020. While working at Craig I was able to meet numerous law enforcement officers that had been injured in the line of duty. Due to my job I was able to connect with these folks on a personal level. Sage's ability to know exactly what to do when a patient was in a wheel chair. bed, unable to talk or reach out he knew exactly how to approach each patient. Sage would lay on the physical therapy tables with the patients and allow them to complete their therapy. I cannot tell you how many times the family would tell me their brother, sister, mother etc., had not spoken a word, moved or had eye contact since the injury. Only to see them blow a kiss, reach out or speak when meeting Sage. I have many incredible memories during my volunteering at Craig. It is an amazing place. One day I hope to return to Craig with a dog or minature horse and continue the great and rewarding work that is being done at Craig every day.
