For the last 15 years, California State Parks Foundation has
worked with key conservation partners on the Save San Onofre Coalition to
preserve San Onofre State Beach from a proposed toll road being constructed
through the heart of the park. Thousands of Californians, especially in San
Diego and Orange County, made their voices heard in urging protection of the 5th
most visited state park in California. Devastating impacts to recreation,
habitat, natural resources, and Native American and archeological resources
were among the many reasons that multiple state, regional, and federal agencies
all repeatedly denied the road.
After years of public hearings, community outreach, lobbying, and
lawsuits, we were able to permanently protect the park by settling a coalition
lawsuit and establishing an avoidance area, which clearly defines where a road
cannot be constructed. That area protects the park and critical watershed.
Now, the City of
San Clemente is suing to undo those protections. By filing the lawsuit, the
San Clemente City Council is supporting a road that would have devastating
impacts to San Onofre State Beach.
It is critical we remind the San
Clemente City Council of the importance of San Onofre State Beach!
If you take action and have not already registered, you will receive periodic updates and communications from California State Parks Foundation.
Use Your Voice to Keep San Onofre State Beach Protected
I respectfully call upon you to drop your lawsuit that threatens a protective agreement in place to safeguard San Onofre State Beach from toll road development. For 15 years, the Save San Onofre Coalition has been fighting to protect the State Park and San Mateo watershed. As you know, decision makers at the state and federal level have continually denied permits for a road that would bifurcate the State Park and gravely impact the watershed.
The lawsuit settlement reached between the Save San Onofre Coalition and the TCA is a historic agreement that represents the will of thousands of people who have fought for over a decade to protect the park and watershed. San Onofre State Beach is a gem enjoyed by millions, a community asset, and an economic engine for San Clemente and southern Orange County.
Your lawsuit regressively seeks to undo protections that save San Onofre, the San Mateo watershed, and Trestles. Please cease all litigation that aims to revoke the protective agreement.
