Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask for your support of the merit based scholarship, Academic Achievement Award (AAA), for high-achieving graduates of New York City high schools, including undocumented students. This scholarship is essential for students entering college to help assist them throughout their academic career.

The need for more support for students has been documented. According to the 2012 statistics, over 13,000 students would have been eligible for this scholarship. Of the eligible Full-time, First-time Freshmen students of Fall 2012, approximate two-thirds had an annual household income of less than $50,000. Furthermore, one-third had an annual income of less than $20,000. Data show that previous City Council's merit scholarship has helped students stay in college and graduate.

This scholarship would also help aid the success of young women and undocumented students, which is critical to the success of our communities and our city. According to the same statistics of 2012, over 61% of first-time freshman scholarship recipients would be female. A large number of eligible recipients would be minority groups, females, and undocumented. Of the undocumented, 60% would be female.

When you take in account all the expenses that the student incurs: tuition, books, transportation, food, and housing, I am sure you will find that we (students) are in need of help. Students are workers, parents, and reflective of the true New York City spirit. We need your support to make sure that this important initiative is included in the adoption of the final budget.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
