I think most of you are familiar with my cousin, Clara’s story (the reason I even set foot on Duke’s campus!) but here is a recap, because it truly is a testament to the unbelievable work they are doing at Duke's Tisch Brain Tumor Center. In 2012, at 9 months pregnant with her second child, a scan found a tumor on Clara’s brain the size of a peach. She had a C-section on her due date, 2 days to recover and then brain surgery to remove the tumor which was later diagnosed as a form of brain cancer. After a year of chemo, the tumor came back. At that point, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer and told she would likely live 6-18 months.
Not accepting that "sentence", she sought treatment at Duke’s Tisch Brain Tumor Center. A second surgery was performed to remove the tumor, more chemo & radiation followed & she enrolled as a participant in their immunotherapy clinical trials. On a monthly basis, small components of the tumor were injected into her bloodstream which trained her immune system to fight the cancerous cells. By April of 2015, her treatment was complete and she has been officially cancer free since...4 years & counting her blessings every single day.
The Tisch Brain Tumor Center is at the forefront of fighting brain cancer. Their clinical trials run the gamut from immunotherapy trials like Clara’s, to using the polio vaccine to kill brain tumors, to figuring out what helps keep patients most comfortable as they undergo such grueling treatment. I’m asking for your help so that hopefully more people can walk away from this awful disease as Clara did. Just click on the "Donate Now" button to contribute to our team in honor of Clara. The run is on Saturday, April 27th...the overall goal of the race is to raise $2M and current standings are at $1.5M so any help is greatly appreciated by myself, my family & and anyone that’s been affected by this disease.
Thank you all for your generosity!
