The Reason Behind "Team Wendy Schmidt"
I decided to start a team in honor of a special person, Wendy Schmidt. She has been so brave in her battle against a glioblastoma. Wendy Schmidt was a guidance counselor at the high school I attended, Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida. When my mom was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, I was at the tender age of 16-18 years old and Wendy made me a priority. She met with me regularly to make sure that I was on track and on the right track! During my junior year, she guided me through the process to get into 'Edison State College', which would allow me to be dual enrolled and receive high school and college credit at the same time. It also allowed me to be with my mom more because I would only be attending class 2x a week instead of 5x a week. She was an advocate for me, provided emotional support, and held me accountable during a time that I could have completely fallen off track. She was persistent on reminding me of application deadlines for college. She even submitted applications on my behalf for scholarships, which I ended up being the recipient of. Needless to say, now that I am an oncology nurse and have overcome these adversities, I don't know if I could have done it without her. This race is for you Wendy! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
