State of Mind

We are running/walking in honor of Jon McGee, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma on March 22, 2018 at the young age of 35. As we approach the one year "tumorversary" of his diagnosis, we want to support pushing research efforts at a much faster rate. Being told that this diagnosis carries an average life expectancy of about 15 months is not what anyone wants to hear after they've already learned they have cancer. We want to do what we can to support cutting-edge brain tumor research that will translate into treatments for patients more quickly.  This is a disease for which there has been practically no improvement in treatment outcome for years and we want to change that!

Jon is attacking this head on and has vowed to adhere to the words of his alma mater’s famed former basketball coach Jim Valvano: “Don't give up. Don't ever give up.”  We were originally told his tumor was inoperable and were also told by an optometrist that he thought, based on just looking at Jon's MRI prior to surgery, that he would never be able to drive again.  After an 8-hour resection surgery, physical and occupational therapy, radiation, and chemo, he started driving and working full-time again just 3 short months after diagnosis. He is feeling strong and his spirits are high. Currently, he is still on maintenance chemotherapy and is using a newer treatment device called Optune, which is an alternating electric field therapy. It is a portable device that interferes with parts of a cell that are needed for tumor cells to grow and spread.  He gets MRI's every 2 months to monitor for recurrence.

We support Angels Among Us because there is a desperate need for better therapies for brain cancer patients. We also want to bring more awareness to brain tumors.  We hope you will join us at the race on April 27th, 2019.  Jon chose "State of Mind" for our team name this year.  I think this is fitting because he has chosen "mind over matter" and has stayed positive throughout this journey so far. Help our PACK RUN DEEP on April 27th as we all come together with our NC State of Mind for victory over brain cancer!

If you would like to join our team, click "JOIN TEAM" and make your $30 donation that registers you for the race.
