The Power of Giving
Some wonder, why does a world leader such as the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke need private funding? In short, private donations fund research to develop new treatments that otherwise would not happen.
Public research funds are distributed based on the incidence of a given disease. Because brain cancer causes just 2% of all cancer related deaths each year, it is officially classified as an "orphan disease" - a term that sums up its place in the eyes of federal funding agents.
Although the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke has received national recognition as an unsurpassed leader, federal funding falls short. To be eligible for grants, the Center must collect as much as 1/3 of a research project's cost through private donations.
