Welcome to My Personal Page
For about 5 years now, I have supported Duke CRUSH 5K Run/Walk to support my patients, their families and our DUKE team who work hand in hand as we try to get through this challenging experience. With my family (Dennis, Ivan, Johanna, KC and Lolammy) backing me up every year as we join our RadOnc team, it had been a fulfilling experience. From Lolammy's doughnuts to glazed lumpia rolls in addition to our Department of Radiation Oncology exhibit, it had just been more fun each year!
This year though is more special to me. I am running for the first time in memory of my grandmother ("Ma" as we fondly call her) who recently passed away in my home country (Philippines). In her last five months, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She opted for supportive care rather than aggressive treatment. Living on the other side of the globe though is not easy. [Though I was blessed to spend a few days of quality time with her before we learned of her diagnosis] I was not at her side during her moments of pain when I could have easily held her hand to let her feel how much I wish to comfort her. I greatly feel the loss... My heart goes out to those who have gone through the same. I have worked closely with my patients but it is totally different when it is your own! I just feel I could have done more.
So in my little way, in her honor, I am doing this first run to share awareness of the disease and ultimately, with great hope, help all realize how much we can impact others with one small step...
a step that we are willing to make to let others know especially those affected with this disease, that we do care...
and that we are ONE in our endeavors to BEAT CANCER!
