According to a January 18th story in Politico, the White House is planning to propose cutting the budget for the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) by 95 percent. ONDCP provides the country with essential programs and critical coordination of the federal response to the drug issue. With 174 overdose deaths each day, these resources are needed now more than ever.
We urge you to send the below email to members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and the White House to express your disagreement with this proposed budget and to save the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Save the Office of National Drug Control Policy
Dear [Decision Maker],
I write to urge you to oppose any cuts to federal funding for the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Every day in the United States, 174 people die from a drug overdose - more than car accidents and gun violence. Families and communities are in desperate need of resources to combat the current opioid epidemic. Now is not the time to eliminate resources from ONDCP, which provides the largest coordinated response to the heroin epidemic and empowers communities across the country. ONDCP is the only agency accountable for prioritizing the drug issue and coordinating the national response, including prevention, intervention, treatment, law enforcement and recovery support systems. Without adequate resources and support of ONDCP, the opioid epidemic will only get worse.
We urge you to oppose any cuts to ONDCP. Furthermore, we urge you to support efforts to reverse the current opioid epidemic and provide additional resources to those suffering from addiction.
