Challenge for Hope Partners
Bayside Rowing Club
The
Bayside Rowing Club was founded in 1993 by Dominic Kahn, two-time
national rowing champion and former coach of Canada's national rowing
team, to make the sport more readily available to children of all
socioeconomic backgrounds. In 1994, Kahn launched a program for kids at
risk, bringing inner city kids out of the city to practice and compete
in a rowing league for free. Over the last 16 years, more than 5,000
Toronto kids have come through the program, several of them going on to
graduate from such elite rowing schools as Princeton, Harvard and Yale.
In 2009, Kahn re-launched the program as the Eric the Red Rowing League
for Kids, with a new style of boat and coaching techniques. In this
inaugural year, more than 550 kids from Regent Park, Flemingdom Park,
Crescent Town, St. James Town and Parkdale participated.

Diabetes Hope Foundation
Diabetes Hope Foundation was created in 1999 by the current Chair, Barbara Pasternak, who has three children, two of whom live with type 1 insulin dependent diabetes. As her boys grew and made their way through the medical system, Barbara became acutely aware of gaps in the health care system for youth with diabetes.
Diabetes Hope Foundation was created to fill that gap and help families struggling with the financial and emotional challenges of children living with diabetes. The Foundation believes that by focusing on these youth today, we can create healthier and more productive adults tomorrow.

I Challenge Diabetes
I Challenge Diabetes (ICD) was founded in 2006 by Chris Jarvis, former
Olympic rower, to provide motivational, technical and educational
support for young people with diabetes, their health care providers and
at times sharing with their teachers, coaches and family support.
Using a unique leadership model, ICD finds and develops the leaders of
tomorrow as they change people’s lives today. Each program works to
address the unique educational needs of participants and health care
providers while impacting a broader advocacy focus as ICD challenges
health and physical fitness goals that are changing the world view of
diabetes.
