About Salon CommUNITY

What is Salon CommUNITY?

Salon CommUNITY is a one day cut-a-thon event. Hosted by Continental Academie, Salon CommUNITY brings together a network of salons and shops to raise awareness and funds for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD), New Hampshire's only children's hospital.

How It Began

Continental Academie and our students rely on our community.

We began fundraising for CHaD when a friend of our President Alida Charbonneau (second generation) had a child that was born with a congenital heart defect. Since 2013 we have held fundraisers in their honor, most recently holding events to donate to the CHaD Battle of the Badges Hockey game.

It's been our dream from the start to involve our student base in the importance of giving back, even after they graduate. After six years of fundraising we found that many students, friends, family, and clients have had to use CHaD's services. This why we feel there is no time like the present to fulfill this initial goal. We have 46 years of Continental Graduates. Let’s create a network of salons and shops that come together to raise awareness and funds for a hospital that touches so many lives. Will you be a part of our SalonCommUNITY?

About Continental Academie

Family owned. Student focused.

Continental Academie is a third generation, family run business that has been a staple of the community since 1973.

Here at Continental, we take pride in every student that walks through our doors. Our goal is to launch our students in the CAREER of their dreams equipped with the CONFIDENCE, technical skills and EMPLOYABILITY to achieve financial and personal satisfaction. Cosmetology is a profession that truly touches people's lives. We see our customers every 3-8 weeks and have formed lifetime friendships over the years.

Being independently owned and not franchised allows us to take a more personal approach to fundraising, picking causes we are truly passionate about.

Continental Academie first began as a salon back in 1964 by founders Rhona Charbonneau and Alida Weergang. Continental Crimping Co. was a small four chair salon located in Hudson, NH. Through the '60s and '70s, Alida gained notoriety as a competitive stylist, working with the likes of Vidal Sassoon and Paul Mitchell. Rhona and Alida opened more salon locations and found it increasingly difficult to find properly trained stylists. In 1973, Continental Academie of Hair Design was born. We moved to our current location in Hudson, NH in 1981. We are currently run by the second and third generations, making this company a true family affair.
