Protect the Boundary Waters from Dangerous Mining Impacts

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is one of the largest and most pristine water wildernesses in North America. It is also home to the Duluth Complex, which includes some of the world's richest untapped deposits of copper, nickel, cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold.  Mining companies are on the verge of tapping these mineral deposits, which could bring a dangerous new mining boom to one of Minnesota's and the world's greatest natural treasures.

I Pledge to Protect the Boundary Waters

Dear [Decision Maker],

I hereby declare the following:

* I recognize the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to be one of Minnesota's and the world's greatest natural treasures

* I acknowledge that the nearby Duluth Complex contains untapped minerals of global significance

* I understand that two major mining initiatives are proposed in this area -- the NorthMet Project and the Twin Metals Project

* I believe that even the most carefully conducted mining results in unavoidable impacts and distinct risks, the effects of which can alter landscapes and permanently destroy wetlands, waterways and wildlife

* I believe that of particular concern are the "tailings" from the mine, which result in highly corrosive liquid sulfuric acid, which has decimated thousands of river miles in other parts of the country

* I respectfully request that Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Forest Service, and any other state or federal agency charged with overseeing these projects provide the utmost scrutiny of mining proposals and issue the strongest possible protections for wildlife, public health and the environment from any impacts on air, land or water

Sincerely,
