Protect and Strengthen Federal Nutrition Programs!
Dear [Decision Maker],
I urge you and your colleagues in the New York Congressional Delegation to protect and strengthen federal nutrition programs that provide a critical safety net and help millions of struggling households. Approximately 1.7 million New Yorkers many of them women, children and seniors rely on emergency food and other anti-hunger programs.
Please support the following programs that help New Yorkers and people across the country: · The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps), helps approximately 1.7 million New Yorkers afford the food they need. SNAP is our first line of defense against hunger. Congress must protect SNAP from harmful policy proposals that could diminish the program's reach and impact on food insecure individuals across the country. · Child Nutrition Reauthorization is a critical opportunity to alleviate child hunger in New York City and across the country. Six years ago, Child Nutrition Reauthorization included cuts to SNAP in order to pay for improvements to child nutrition programs. Since the cuts went into effect in November 2013, they have taken away more than 116 million meals from New Yorkers in need the majority of whom are children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Congress must support a bill that that includes improvements to child nutrition programs without harming other anti-hunger or anti-poverty programs. · The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provides commodities for distribution by emergency food providers. This steady and nutritious stream of food helps make it possible for New York City's network of food relief organizations to serve 1.4 million New Yorkers. Congress must fund TEFAP at authorized levels to maximize support to emergency food providers.
Thank you for your continued support. Together we can help New Yorkers in need.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
