Support $51M in Funding to HPNAP in the NYS Budget!
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent, I urge you to support funding for the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) at $51 million in the 2017-2018 New York State budget. This funding increase will better align program funding with increased need and rising food costs.
Current funding for HPNAP is insufficient. While emergency food programs work every day to help New Yorkers in need, nearly half of food pantries and soup kitchens in New York City reported that they had run out of food in September of 2016. Existing resources continue to fall short, which is why it is essential to increase funding to HPNAP to allow food pantries and soup kitchens to continue to support their clients during challenging times.
HPNAP is one of the most successful anti-poverty and nutrition programs in New York. When HPNAP was created in 1984, it made New York one of the first states in the nation to provide direct support to local hunger relief efforts. HPNAP enables local emergency food providers to distribute millions of pounds of nutritionally balanced food to New Yorkers in need. As you move ahead with the State budget, I urge you to protect and strengthen HPNAP so that people across the state can benefit from this critical program. Thank you for your continued support.
