Thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for Standing up for Food Assistance

The Senate just passed a Farm Bill that includes critical provisions to protect federal nutrition programs and make sure food banks have enough nutritious food to help communities in need. The Senate Farm Bill protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which ensures millions of families, children, and seniors have food assistance when they fall on hard times.

Take a moment to thank New York's Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for voting to protect food assistance, and rejecting amendments that would take food away from our neighbors in need.

Thank you for your vote to help increase food assistance

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of the Food Bank For New York City, I'm writing to thank you for voting for a Farm Bill that protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and increases funding for the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which helps food banks provide nutritious foods to people in need. Thank you especially for rejecting harmful amendments that propose to take food away from low income people in America.

For the 1.4 million New York City residents that rely on emergency food, TEFAP provides food pantries and soup kitchens nutritious food from U.S. farmers and producers. In fact, almost one in five meals distributed by all local hunger-relief agencies in 2017 was moved, stored, and served because of TEFAP, which is a cornerstone of the food supply for our national network of food banks.

SNAP and TEFAP work together to fight hunger for millions of Americans. SNAP provides meals to 2.8 million New Yorkers in need, including 1.6 million NYC residents, and brings more food to the table of low income families in two months than NY's entire emergency food assistance network does all year.

Food assistance programs like SNAP and TEFAP let all people participate in their local economies and makes our communities stronger. Thank you for your ongoing support for a strong Farm Bill that invests in food assistance.
