Dear [Decision Maker],
In recent weeks, President Obama has highlighted the need for ANY immigration reform to include protections for LGBT couples and their families. As your constituent, I urge you to ensure that any immigration reform considered also includes LGBT couples, so all families are treated equally under the law. Current federal legislation does not recognize the relationships of bi-national same-sex couples. Through narrow definitions of family, immigration law does not allow LGBT U.S. citizens to sponsor their same-sex partners for permanent visas, and puts these families under undue financial and emotional strain as they grapple with limited options of keeping their families together. But it's not just the 36,000 bi-national LGBT couples living in the U.S. who are affected. Almost half of these couples are raising children together which means that thousands of children nationwide are also victims of discriminatory immigration laws. It's time for federal immigration law to stop discriminating against families with parents who are LGBT and give all children the same access to stable, secure families. As your constituent, I am counting on you to do the right thing, and support immigration reform that includes LGBT families and their children.
