Hunger Walk 2021

Northside Block by Block

Northside Block by Block is participating in the Virtual Hunger Walk to support Churches Active in Northside (CAIN)

Churches Active in Northside - CAIN

CAIN has been feeding neighbors in the 45223 zip code for decades through their Rainbow Choice Food Pantry, and in the past year they have expanded their services to folks all over the region. Fresh produce and other healthy foods are hard to find and even harder to afford for so many of us, which is why CAIN’s work is so important. If you’ve ever struggled with choosing between paying your bills or buying healthy, nourishing food for yourself or your family, you know how much we need them in our community.

Testimony from CAIN: “The basics of food and shelter are critically important now more than ever during the pandemic. CAIN has worked through many challenges over the past year and continues to serve an ever-growing number of our community's most vulnerable citizens. We continue to serve our neighbors in Northside and beyond and have had a tremendous increase in need.  We have seen a 53% increase in unique households served from 1,076 households in 2019 to 2,047 in 2020.  We saw a 50% increase in household visits with many visiting multiple times a month. The need for rental assistance has increased during the pandemic as well. We have increased our spending from $13,903 in 2019 to $25,493 in 2020 helping to keep 127 families in housing.”

Northside Block by Block

Northside Block by Block is an intentional group of neighbors and workers who fight for, advocate for, and empower one another to create an equitable, just, and sustainable neighborhood. We are cultivating a neighborhood where everyone feels safe, belongs, contributes to decision making, shares community and greenspace, and can afford to work, live, and play here to be in community with one another. We do this by working towards equitable development, connecting with neighbors to build community, reclaiming the narrative around our neighborhood, and working in solidarity with similar community groups striving to make lives better. As part of that effort to build solidarity, we have formed a Hunger Walk team to support our neighbors at CAIN.
